Is there a way to restrict it to only appear on the first page on multiple page documents? I am considering providing two templates. One using the Header/Footer for those who want it.
Formatting symbols (called invisibles) like the ones shown below are added every time you press the Space bar, Tab, or Return, and when you add a column break, page break, or section break. By default, you can’t see them, but you can turn them on to see where formatting changes have been applied. You can hide them again when you don’t need to see them.
You can use Layout View to show the faint gray boxes that outline the different text areas of your document—including headers, footers, columns, text boxes, and the document body (the main area of text in the document). This view can help you troubleshoot layout problems.
Show or hide formatting marks
Do one of the following:

- Show invisibles: Choose View > Show Invisibles (from the View menu at the top of your screen).Note: The View button in the toolbar doesn’t have this command.
- Hide invisibles: Choose View > Hide Invisibles.
Note: You can’t add layout breaks—they appear automatically when you adjust columns for selected text.
Change the color of formatting marks
- Choose Pages Preferences (from the Pages menu at the top of your screen).
- Click General, then click the color well next to Invisibles to choose another color.

You can add shapes to your SmartArt graphic either from within the SmartArt graphic or from within the Text pane. You can also add text boxes to position text anywhere you want to, near or on top of your SmartArt graphic.

- Type your text in the SmartArt graphic shape.
- Copy text from another location or program, and then paste your text in the SmartArt graphic shape.

Adding a text box does not add text to the SmartArt graphic itself, but allows you to position comments and other text wherever you like, close to or on top of your SmartArt graphic.
- On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Text Box.If you're using Microsoft Office Word 2007, click the type of text box that you want.
- Click the text box, and then do one of the following: Text editor for mac show linebreak.
- Type your text in the text box.
- Copy text from another location or program, and then paste your text in the text box.
